Sylvia Knocks One Outta the Park on BRHLL Opening Day

Welp, I did it. After months of prep, paint fumes, late-night shelf-building, and way too many Lowe’s runs, my mobile kid’s bookstore finally made its grand debut in Indianapolis. And let me tell you—she rolled in like a glow-up on wheels.

For years, I imagined my moment at the ballfield would involve being dramatically called in to pinch-hit during the high-stakes Mudhens vs. Bulls game. Instead? I became the team sponsor. Slightly less dramatic, but hey, I’ll take it.

I arrived early at the Broad Ripple Haverford Little League fairgrounds, the sun rising and fresh dew sparkling on my trusty metal jacket. Nerves were high, but I powered through the setup. And soon enough, the crowd started rolling in. Kids in fresh baseball uniforms darted toward the picture tent, showing off their best dirt slides and chewing bubblegum like they’d been at this for years. Meanwhile, parents—sporting sweats and clinging to oversized Yeti cups full of hot coffee—shuffled around, clearly operating on nothing but caffeine and sheer willpower after a 7 a.m. weekend wake-up call.

Once I opened my little mobile kids bookstore, it didn’t take long for the first customer to appear. A young girl and her mom casually browsed, flipping through books like they were on a story-filled treasure hunt. After a solid deliberation, the young lady landed on Harry Potter—a classic.

The floodgates opened. It was game on, people. My bookstore was suddenly packed. Kids with powdered sugar donuts in one hand and a book in the other, parents trailing behind with looks of equal excitement as they stepped inside. The magic of a bookstore? It’s indescribable. Kids were oozing curiosity, diving into worlds of adventure while their parents looked on with pride—probably feeling just a little bit relieved that their kid had picked up a book instead of yet another video game.

Books like Bluey, Minecraft, Dog Man, Wings of Fire, and even baseball-themed stories were flying off the shelves faster than I could restock. The energy? Unmatched. The joy of seeing kids’ eyes light up with excitement when they found that perfect book? Truly priceless.

Exhausted? Yes. But as I drove home, lights sparkling on my trusty mobile bookstore, I couldn’t stop replaying the day in my head. It was amazing. This little dream of mine had come to life—and I can’t wait to do it all again!

Fueled by fiction and fumes,

Sylvia
