Sylvia vs. The Weather | 2026 Epicurean Market at MOKAO
I, (The Book Fairy mobile bookstore, Sylvia) returned to the Indianapolis Epicurean Market at The Stutz for a rainy but memorable Saturday event.
We’re talking full-on “raining cats, dogs, and possibly a few hardcover encyclopedias.” Not exactly ideal conditions for strolling over to a shiny little mobile bookstore. So instead of a steady stream of visitors, I got more of a select, VIP experience. (We love exclusivity. We tell ourselves this.)
But here’s the thing—the folks who did brave the weather? Absolute gems.
I saw some familiar faces (hi, repeat customers—I remember you and your excellent taste), and made a few new friends along the way. One passerby stopped just to take photos of me for their significant other who works at a library—which, frankly, felt like being admired by extended family. A security guard snapped pictures to send to her dad, who runs his own mobile barbershop. Respect recognizes respect in the mobile business world.
And then there were the teachers. Always the teachers. They showed up, browsed, chatted, and did what they do best—talk about kids, books, and the kind of literacy work that actually makes a difference. We swapped info, swapped ideas, and probably could’ve solved at least three educational system issues if we’d had another hour (and maybe snacks).
Meanwhile, the city was buzzing with NCAA fans in town, decked out in their team gear, adding a little extra energy to the day. I like to think a few of them considered trading in their brackets for books. (Character development, if you will.)
So yes—was it a soggy, slightly quieter day? Sure.
But it was also a good one. The kind where the conversations are a little longer, the connections a little stronger, and the people who show up are exactly the ones who were meant to.
And honestly? I’ll take that kind of story any day.
Weather: questionable. Day: worth it.
