Stories Worth Celebrating at Camp Mariposa

October 11| Aaron’s Place Camp Mariposa at Jameson Camp

Every once in a while, we get to be part of something that reminds us exactly why we do what we do. This October, The Book Fairy fluttered up to Camp Mariposa: Aaron’s Place, where the theme for the weekend was one of our favorites—Celebrate! The weather was absolutely exquisite, and if you’ve never been to Jameson Camp…you must check it out!

Camp Mariposa is a truly special place: a year-round mentoring and prevention program for youth ages 9–12 who are impacted by a loved one’s substance use. At each weekend camp, kids gather to laugh, learn, hike, make s’mores, and, most importantly, connect—with each other and with trained mentors who remind them they’re never alone.

This month’s “Celebrate!” weekend invited campers to honor what makes them proud of themselves, to celebrate their loved ones, and to recognize the beauty in what makes each of us unique. And what better way to do that than through the power of books?

Some of these incredible kids already find comfort in reading—a quiet escape and a healthy coping tool when the world feels heavy. Others are still searching for that spark. Our goal was simple: help every camper discover a story that celebrates them, in all their color and complexity.

Watching their faces light up as they chose a book to take home reminded us that reading isn’t just about words on a page—it’s about connection, confidence, and the reminder that their stories matter too.

We left camp with full hearts (and maybe a few glittery bookplates lighter), feeling grateful for the mentors, families, and staff who make Aaron’s Place such a source of joy and resilience. Here’s to celebrating stories, self-worth, and all the beautiful ways kids find light—even in the hardest chapters.

Thank you to all the beautiful staff and volunteers at Aaron’s Place!
