Opening Day, One Year Later: Sylvia Returns to Broad Ripple Haverford Little League (2026)
I woke up early. Like… offensively early. The kind of early where even the coffee is judging you.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a 1965 Avion turned mobile bookstore, it’s this: Opening Day at Broad Ripple Haverford Little League doesn’t wait for anyone. And honestly? I wouldn’t miss it.
From First Event to Full Circle Moment
One year ago—almost to the day—I rolled into Broad Ripple Haverford Little League for my very first event as The Book Fairy.
No pressure. Just a brand-new business, a freshly renovated camper, and a whole lot of “let’s see if this works.”
Fast forward to 2026… and there I was again, parked and ready, watching families arrive as early as 7:45 AM for team pictures. Same fields. Same energy. But this time?
People walked up and said:
“Wait—I remember you from last year.”
And listen… I don’t have tear ducts, but if I did, we’d have had a moment.
A Perfect Baseball Morning (With Books, Obviously)
The weather showed off. Sunny, crisp, the kind of Indiana spring day that makes you forget winter ever happened.
Families came ready—cleats, gloves, sliding mitts (all the rage), coffee in hand—and somehow still found room to climb inside and browse shelves like it was their second sport.
Inside?
- Kids flipping through pages like they were scouting their next MVP read
- Parents whispering, “Okay, one more book…” (a lie, respectfully)
- The hottest category of the day: “Just Dropped Books of 2026” (instant fan favorites)
Outside?
Dan—resident operations guy and part-time chaos coordinator—set up a baseball toss game.
Throw a ball → win a prize.
Prizes = stickers + baseball cards = absolute mayhem.
It was giving:
- competitive
- slightly unhinged
- deeply joyful
Negotiations Were… Aggressive
Let’s talk about the real action of the day: book bartering.
I had:
- Kids in full baseball uniforms
- Kids in bike helmets (unclear if they rode here or just live like that now)
- Kids attempting high-level negotiation tactics
Examples include:
- “What if I promise to read it twice?”
- “What if I hit a home run today? Then can I get it?”
- “What if I just… take it and come back later?” (bold strategy)
Honestly? Respect the hustle.
New Traditions (and a Little Drip)
In addition to books, we had a surprise hit:
baseball necklace drip. We know our audience.
Kids walked out looking like they had a NIL deal pending.
Between that, the books, and the prizes, it felt less like a booth and more like a full-on Opening Day experience.
The Real MVPs: BRHLL Volunteers
None of this works without the people behind the scenes. And the crew at Broad Ripple Haverford Little League?
Absolutely phenomenal.
Organized, welcoming, kind, and somehow managing hundreds of families before most of the city had finished breakfast.
We are so grateful to be invited back for Year 2—and if they’ll have us, we’ll keep showing up with books, chaos, and just enough structure to keep things legal.
Why This One Matters
Opening Day isn’t just about baseball.
It’s about:
- community
- tradition
- kids showing up excited for something bigger than themselves
And getting to be a small part of that—again—one year after our very first event?
That’s the kind of full-circle moment you don’t plan for… but you hold onto.
Same Time Next Year?
I’ll be here.
Still stocked with books.
Still being negotiated with by tiny humans in cleats.
And still thinking:
this is exactly where I’m supposed to be.
XO—Sylvia
