Long time listener, first time crawler. Sylvia takes on the Indy Indie Book Crawl like a pro.
Four days. Thirty-six stores. Ten pop-ups. One very sparkly silver camper trying to keep up.
The Indy Indie Book Crawl took over Indianapolis in the best possible way—
stretching across neighborhoods, bookstores, and the very walkable, very bustling Stutz Building, where ten of us pop-up folks set up shop. And let me tell you… this was not your average “quiet bookstore weekend.”
This was a full-on, citywide literary adventure.
Thousands of people showed up—book lovers, casual browsers, spring breakers, families, dogs (honestly, some of the best customers), and plenty of “wait, what is happening here?” passersby who quickly became participants. The common denominator? A shared love of a good story… or at least a good excuse to buy one.
At every stop, people proudly pulled out their bookmark passports—holding them out like seasoned travelers—waiting for their next stamp. Proof of one more shop, one more story, one more “well I guess I have to buy this now.” And if that wasn’t enough, there was Bingo. Because nothing motivates a crowd quite like the possibility of prizes and a little light competition.
And let’s talk about the weather, because for once, Indiana decided to behave. After snow earlier in the week (rude), we were gifted four straight days of 70–80 degree sunshine. It felt like the city collectively said, “I’ll be seasonally appropriate, but not for more than 4 days.”
Sylvia, naturally, thrived.
She met new faces, welcomed back frequent fliers, and—without exaggeration—was treated like a bit of a local celebrity. People stopped for photos, waved as they walked by, and did that double-take like, “Wait… is that a mobile kids bookstore?” (Yes. Yes it is.)
By the end of day one, we were already restocking. By day four… Sylvia was feeling noticeably lighter. Slim, even. Turns out when you remove a few hundred pounds of books via eager readers, a girl starts to feel it. No GLP-1’s here.
But more than anything, this weekend was a reminder of what happens when a city shows up for independent bookstores. It wasn’t just about sales (though—wow, thank you). It was about connection. Conversations. Recommendations. Kids dragging parents in. Adults saying, “I loved the bookmobile when I was a kid!”
And then leaving with a stack.
Indy showed up in a big way. And Sylvia? She’s already hoping we do it all over again next year.
Thank you Indy Indie Book Crawl, Tomorrow Book Store, The Stuz, and all you sweet, beautiful people!
Cheers,
Sylvia
