Books, Beautiful Weather & Dan’s Big Debut: The Book Fairy at Military Park

October 23, 2026 | Book Fair in the Park | Military Park, Indianapolis

Well, Indianapolis, you really outdid yourself.

Perfect fall weather, a beautiful downtown park, wonderful people, and an entire event dedicated to books. Frankly, I don’t know why we don’t do this every Friday.

On October 23, I rolled into Military Park in downtown Indianapolis for Book Fair in the Park, a fantastic event hosted by White River State Park and GoodRiches Books. The concept was simple: bring independent bookstores, book lovers, and the community together for a day celebrating reading.

As a 1965 Avion camper turned mobile children’s bookstore, I felt particularly qualified for this assignment. I’m basically a library with wheels, excellent vintage curves, and a slightly questionable turning radius.

There was just one small change to the usual program.

Casey was under the weather, which meant Dan was officially promoted from supporting cast to leading man.

And folks, he understood the assignment.

The Book Fairy Has a New Employee of the Month

Now, Dan is no stranger to my operation. He’s been hauling me around Indianapolis, helping with school book fairs, loading books, and generally doing whatever Casey has decided needs doing.

But running the show solo? That’s a different ballgame.

And let me tell you, the man showed up and SHOWED OUT.

He got me parked, set up shop, welcomed customers, recommended books, and kept things running beautifully throughout the day.

No panic. No chaos. No frantic calls to management. Well, none that I’m publicly acknowledging.

I was impressed.

I’m not suggesting Casey’s position is in jeopardy, but Dan might want to update his résumé. Apparently, he’s got range.

A Perfect Fall Day at Military Park in Indianapolis

Let’s talk about the weather, because Indiana doesn’t always understand the assignment.

But on this particular Friday? Perfection.

The sun was shining, the temperature was comfortable, and Military Park provided a beautiful backdrop for an outdoor book fair in downtown Indianapolis.

People trickled through throughout the day, browsing the local bookstores, visiting with community organizations, enjoying snacks, and generally taking advantage of a gorgeous fall afternoon.

There were returning customers who already knew me, new visitors discovering The Book Fairy for the first time, and even a few kiddos wandering through despite it being a school day.

I’m not here to investigate attendance records. I’m here to sell books.

Children’s Books, Christmas Shopping & a Little Self-Indulgence

One of the best things about being a mobile children’s bookstore in Indianapolis is seeing how differently people shop for books.

Some visitors came with a mission, carefully selecting books for their children or grandchildren. Others were browsing for birthday gifts or getting a jump on Christmas shopping.

October Christmas shoppers? We respect the organization.

Although we all know at least one of those carefully selected gifts will be hidden somewhere so cleverly that it won’t resurface until February.

Then there were the adults who wandered in claiming to be shopping for their children, only to become suspiciously attached to a book themselves.

Listen, you’re among friends.

If you want that beautifully illustrated picture book for your own bookshelf, buy it. Adulthood is hard enough without pretending everything fun is for someone else.

Whether customers were searching for a new bedtime story, a gift for a young reader, or simply something that caught their eye, there was plenty of book goodness to go around.

And that’s the beauty of an independent bookstore. You never quite know what you’re going to discover.

Supporting Independent Bookstores and Literacy in Indianapolis

What made Book Fair in the Park at Military Park so special wasn’t just the weather or the beautiful location.

It was the people and the purpose.

White River State Park and Good Riches Books created an opportunity for local independent bookstores, community partners, and readers to come together in a welcoming, accessible space.

No complicated agenda. No elaborate production. Just books, conversations, and a shared appreciation for reading.

For The Book Fairy, that’s exactly the kind of community event we love.

Our mission has always been about more than selling children’s books. We want to make reading exciting, accessible, and affordable for kids and families throughout Indianapolis and Central Indiana.

Whether I’m parked outside a school for a book fair, attending a neighborhood festival, or spending a beautiful Friday at Military Park, the goal remains the same: get more books into more hands.

Because access to books shouldn’t depend on a family’s budget, neighborhood, or ZIP code.

And if we can accomplish that while enjoying sunshine, meeting adorable dogs, and watching adults justify their fifth book purchase of the afternoon?

Even better.

Good Books, Great People, and One Very Capable Dan

As the afternoon wound down, I couldn’t help but appreciate what a lovely way this was to kick off the fall season.

Familiar faces, new friends, community connections, and a steady stream of people who genuinely appreciate books and the small businesses that bring them into our neighborhoods.

A huge thank-you to White River State Park and GoodRiches Books for organizing such a wonderful event. Book Fair in the Park was a fantastic concept, and we’re grateful to have been part of it.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by The Book Fairy, whether you purchased a book, chatted with Dan, admired my vintage exterior, or simply popped in to see what a 61-year-old camper was doing full of children’s literature.

And finally, a special shoutout to Dan.

You handled the day like a pro.

Casey may have missed this one, but The Book Fairy was in excellent hands.

Don’t let it go to your head, though. We still need you to hitch the trailer.

Until next time, Indianapolis. Keep reading, keep supporting local, and keep making room on those bookshelves.

With love, literary enthusiasm, and absolutely no intention of retiring,

XO-Sylvia
